Eurovision: if you didn’t watch it, you missed out!

May 12, 2014

It’s tacky, it’s kitsch, and it’s not even our competition, so there’s no real reason to watch Eurovision for lots of people. But this year was a little bit different. Did you see it?

The Eurovision Song Contest aired on SBS last night, and contained the usual array of glitz and glamour, tackiness and kitsch. There were singing twins on a seesaw with their hair entwined (the Russian entry), a man in a giant hamster wheel (from the Ukraine) and the usual line-up of fantastically outrageous hairstyles – probably topped by France’s weird, pointy monstrosity.

All the usual shenanigans was present and correct – there was plenty of political voting that didn’t reflect the quality of the songs, and there was some outrageously overt sexuality – yes, I’m talking about you, Poland.

Yes, it’s all very silly. But if you didn’t watch Eurovision this year – even if you couldn’t care less about the silly contest, it’s definitely worth a watch of the winner.

Austria’s “Bearded Lady” Conchita Wurst belted out Rising Like a Phoenix like Shirley Bassey at her best, thus combining the bizarre (a stunning drag queen with a full beard) with the downright brilliant.

Check out the winning song here, and tell us, did you like the entry? Do you think Austria deserved to win? Or do you simply not care about Eurovision whatsoever than you very much?
