The PBS loophole that is catching out seniors

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is a great thing that really helps many seniors to save money on their health. But, this week one Starts at 60 community member brought something to our attention.

She said that she couldn’t claim a repeat subscription when she went to the pharmacy under the PBS as it wasn’t in the right time frame.

We did some digging around and found out that the PBS has some very sensitive rules that are reducing the benefits seniors are receiving under the scheme.

The one that this community member was getting caught out on was that you cannot claim a repeat prescription within the 20 day safety net. The earliest time that you can get a new prescription and claim it under the PBS is on the 21st day.

Some people haven’t been aware of this as it hasn’t been widely advertised.

The PBS is something available to all Australians with a Medicare card, but unless you are aware of all of the rules and limitations there are probably savings that you’re missing out on.

There are also alleged reports that some medications (especially combination medications) available under the PBS scheme are available at prices cheaper when purchased by the individual outside of the scheme.

The 20 day safety net rule applies to a wide range of medications available under the PBS and if you’re not sure whether the rule applied to your medications, you can check by clicking here.

So tell us, do you use the PBS? Have you found it cost effective? Or have you been caught out by rules like the 20 day safety net? Tell us in the comments below…
