What pisses me off? 60 is not old!

Apr 13, 2014

Today is Sunday, and you know what pisses me off.. people who treat 60 year olds like they’re old and a turn away from our death bed. Why? Because, quite frankly, talking to you every day, we know you’re just not that not old.

Running this website has been an incredible eye opener into the way society perceives over 60s… If we had a dollar for every large-button phone or funeral insurance company that had approached us about working together, we’d be some very rich people. But it’s wrong. You aren’t old. At 60, a funeral for us is one of the furthest things from our mind. This is mainly because we aren’t old. And we have so much living left to do…

Just this week, we have had two interesting proposals from businesses looking to work with us. One was a phone company selling a phone that, really, is the equivalent to a child’s play toy… In fact, upon later investigation I found out it had two target markets, old seniors with failing eyesight and primary age school children.

I found it quite insulting to think that this company thought that over 60s are technologically challenged people who can’t work their way through a proper phone. The phone they were advertising has four buttons and no actual screen. This seems ridiculous considering many of you have an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy!

There was also another company who wanted to discuss transitions for getting 60 year olds safe cars and transitioning them into using other public transport methods to get them off the road. Suggesting that a 60 year old can’t drive is ridiculous. There are some unfortunate people who due to illness or disability don’t have this luxury, but for the majority of over 60s this is just ludicrous.

JUST BECAUSE WE ARE 60 DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE OLD!

We still have complete brain function (maybe subdued by a lifetime of wine).

We still have complete physical ability (albeit a little slow and sore at times).

We still have more fun than most people (after all, the hard part of life is over). We still have strong opinions that should be heard because they are valid.

And we still deserve to be treated with respect by everyone.

So, dear society, 60 is not old. In fact, it’s the age when life starts to get a whole lot more fun!
