20 little known facts about the human body

There are so many amazing things in this world, but nothing compares to the human body. We have 20 little known facts about the human organs and cells that help keep us alive.

1. The average person expels flatulence 14 times a day. You might think you’re too dignified to pass gas but the reality is that everyone will at least a few times a day.

2. We shed around 600,000 particles of skin every hour and if you add that up, by the age of 70 most of us will have lost around 48kg of skin.

3. Our breathing rate slows as we age. A person at rest usually breathes between 12 and 15 minutes in a minute (women and children breathe faster).

4. Our nose and ears never stop growing. Your eyes on the other hand are the same size from birth.

5. The brain and nerve cell are the only cells that the body cannot regenerate so once they are damaged, they cannot be replaced.

6. Our brain consists of 80 per cent liquid – this is due to the high blood and water content of the tissue.

7. Your stomach creates a new lining every three days to avoid digesting itself.

8. If our eyes were digital cameras, they would have 576 megapixels. Currently the best camera has 50 megapixels.

9. For our brain to function properly it needs a quarter of the oxygen used by the human body.

10. Typically, by around the age of 60, we start to have difficulty breathing and we begin to snore (60% of men and 40% of women).

11. The amount of blood that circulates our body increases. As a baby we have about 250 ml of blood and has an adult we have about four litres. It is pumped to all tissues by the heart in about one minutes while beating.

12. A healthy adult can produce almost 200 billion new red blood cells each day.

13. As you age, sweating decreases. Underarm-perspiration decreases and instead come in the form of hot flashes.

14. Similar to our fingerprints, everyone’s tongue has a unique print.

15. Our bodies contain enough iron to make an iron nail up to 7.5 cm long.

16. On average, we produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools.

17. You are taller in the morning than in the evening. This is because the cartilage in our spines slowly compresses during the day.

18. Human bone is as strong as granite, relative to supporting resistance. In fact, compared to concrete, human bone is four times greater in support strength.

19. Most people will have lost about half their taste buds by the age of 60.

20. We are born with over 350 bones but as we grow our bones fuse together. Most adults only have around 200 bones.
