10 best Australian bushwalks

If you live in the city, bushwalking is a wonderful way to get in touch with nature and get back to basics. Lucky we have a great country with diverse walking tracks and thousands of kilometres to explore! Here are our top 10 favourite bushwalks:

 

Larapinta Trail, NT

The Larapinta Trail is a track that should be embarked on by anyone who wishes to explore the very heart of Central Australia along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering unsurpassed views of Simpsons Gap, Ormiston Gorge and countless other outback highlights.

A bonus is that each section of the trail is accessible by car so you can choose from plenty of places to start your hike…all of them are awesome!

Fraser Island Great Walk, QLD

Fraser Island itself is a beautiful place but if you can break away from the beach, why not take a walk on the island’s tracks? There’s 90km to choose from and each offer highlights of Fraser such as Lake Mackenzie, rainforests and incredible sand dunes.

 

 

Cradle Mountain Summit, TAS

An untouched paradise, Tasmania has so much to offer a bush walker, particularly in Cradle Mountain. Dove Lake offers a breathtaking vision once you arrive on one of many paths in the Lake St Clair National Park. Take in Cradle Mountain from the lake or brave it and hike to the top to see the for miles from up high

 

Great Ocean Walk, VIC

We’ve all done the Great Ocean Road, but what about the Great Ocean Walk? In the same area, this trail spans for an impressive 104 kilometres. Victoria is home to several wonderful national parks and this walk allows you to explore nature and the coastline.

It’s hard to choose a favourite part of this scenic walk, but the majestic 12 Apostles are a highlight. Bring the camera!

 

 

Stirling Ranges, WA 

Western Australia has such colourful landscapes, it’s hard to look past the state when it comes to bush walking. Some of the most popular walks in the Stirling Range include Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup Peak, Ellen Peak, Mt Trio and the Stirling Ridge Walk.

The area is well known for its flowering plants, with wildflowers a colourful highlight in September and October and orchids in full bloom in August to early November.

 

Heysen Trail, SA

We have it all in Australia, including one of the world’s longest continuous footpaths situated in South Australia – the Heysen Trail. 1200km of walking, this trail is for serious trekkers and wine drinkers!

 

 

Cape Byron Track, NSW

If you want to feel like you’re on top of the world, Cape Byron is a close contenders! This uplifting track takes you along the North Coast of New South Wales, on Australia’s easternmost mainland point.

Visit the lighthouse, swim in the bay and look out for whales!

 

 

Great Dividing Trail, VIC

280km of track make up the Great Dividing Trail found in central Victoria. The former gold mining area is rich with history and there’s plenty of space to explore!

The track passes through the southern end of the Great Dividing Range and offers some truly incredible views of the spectacular scenery that these parts are known for.

 

O’Reilly’s Lamington National Park, QLD

Near the QLD-NSW border lies a natural wonder: the Lamington National Park. Perched up high is O’Reilly’s with its fantastic walking tracks through rainforests and alongside waterfalls.

The kids will love the Tree Top walk in the canopy of the rainforest plus the wildlife that comes out to play.

 

Namadgi National Park, ACT

Canberra is home to the Namadhi National Park in the Australian alps – yes, we have alps! They are rare in Australia so no matter what walking track you select, you will see something you can’t find anywhere else in Australia, or even the world – animals and plants thrive here that you may never have seen before!
