How to pack a light carry-on bag

If you’re just traveling domestically, you may be able to squeeze all your stuff in your carry-on bag. It’ll save you the expense of checking a bag, as well as, save you time at the airport waiting at baggage claim. The trade off is that you must learn to live with less but you’ll soon realise the tough choices were worth it. Here is how to think and pack your carry-on bag like a minimalist.

1. Take what you need – that includes toiletries!

It may seem obvious but take only what you need! You don’t need to pack the kitchen sink; you will survive without your favourite pen, eye cream or shampoo. You’d be surprised what you actually end up using when you travel. Plus, the hotel or accommodation you are staying at will likely have some soap and other toiletries for you to use.

2. Take multipurpose items and wear the bulkiest items in transit

How often have you travelled and ended up wearing the same outfit most of the trip? Limit yourself to a certain number of outfits and wear your heavier/warm clothes on the plane. You will likely wear the same outfit multiple times when you travel. Try to ensure your clothes are colour coordinated so you can swap around different items easily to make a new look – layer to change your look.

3. Remove “just in case” items

Unless you’re hiking Mount Everest, you will be able to buy these items at your destination. It may not be slightly more expensive or a waste of money but realistically, you will not need these items and they just take up unnecessary space for things you might/will need.

4. Invest in compression bags

Compression bags will help capitalise on precious space. Just keep in mind they will help everything fit but you must ensure your bag is still within the weight limit.

5. Roll don’t fold

Rolling clothes is a great option to minimise wrinkles and maximise space.

6. Swap your personal carry-on

Swap your usual smaller purse with a backpack or larger purse. You’re allowed a personal carry-on so capitalise on this added space.

7. Wash, rinse, repeat

If you really haven’t brought enough clothes, you can always wash your clothes. Pack or buy a mild soap and rinse out your belongings in the hotel sink.

Are you traveling anywhere soon? Do you travel light or do you always overpack?
