What are the best travel tips: have your say

My dad is headed off on an overseas trip next week, and as this is one of the first big trips of his retirement he rang me up for some tips and tricks.  He is keen for you to come together and share the top travel tips you have learned over the years, that make your long haul trips and travel easier.

We took a look around and came up with some of the finest tips we could find; and shared some of our own too:

1.  If you travel overseas more than twice per year you might like to consider buying an annual travel insurance policy.

2.  Don’t store all your cash and credit cards in the same place.  If you are walking around, put some in your pouch, some in your wallet, and some in your bag.  Or, if you are travelling with someone else, divide the money and credit cards amongst you.

3.  Carry a plastic poncho… there is possibly no handier item to have in a bag.

4.  Also, carry and remember to use a bottle of hand sanitiser, before eating particularly and after catching public transport.

5.  Consider forgoing the hotel breakfast.  Unless it is included in the price, traditional hotel breakfasts can be expensive and soulless.  Why not try wandering down the road and picking up a coffee and local breakfast at a cafe.

6.  Carry a scarf.  It is the easiest way to dress up a casual black or white outfit, and it is incredibly lightweight way to do so, ensuring you feel stylist even when you are being casual.

7.  Hang the do not disturb sign on the door of your hotel room when you go out, if you are in any way worried about your security when you go out.

8.  Wear a helmet.  If you are hiring a moped or lightweight motorbike in Thailand, Greece or other island location, enjoy it.  They probably wont even check you have a drivers license, and they wont make you wear a helmet… but please, for your own sake, wear one.

9.  Throw in a double adapter.  If you carry an iphone and an ipad, or similar, it is often handy to have a double adapter on hand so you can charge two items at one time, fast.

10.  Pack sandwich bags – large ones.  They are a great way to keep your dirty luggage separate from your clean luggage, and your socks and jocks in order.

11.  Do you find it hard to sleep in strange locations?  Buy some quality ear plugs.  They’ll help you block out the noise outside and might just assist you in the plane flight too.

12.  Consider investing in an uncuttable handbag (ladies) to carry your money and valuable things like camera and ipad.  They aren’t as heavy as a backpack and they are convenient and handy.  Some also include sections that are “unscannable” by identity thieves.
