Your say: Should police seize mobiles after car accidents

Jul 26, 2014

daily mailIn the UK, Police have come out overnight and said that they will seize all mobile phones after car crashes in a bid to crackdown on drivers calling and texting at the wheel.  Distracted drivers are becoming a massive problem on the road.  But do you think it is time to do something about it?  I have horrors when I look at people on the road, looking down at their phone while driving along.  Maybe this will help… but we want you to have your say today.

Texting, surfing the internet or talking on the phone while driving is now one of the top five causes of fatalities on NSW roads, along with speeding, fatigue and drink driving, road safety officials say.

The use of phones while driving has overtaken people not wearing seatbelts as one of the major causes of fatal car accidents, said Marg Prendergast, general manager of the NSW Centre for Road Safety in a report earlier this year.

From July 2013 to January 2014, more than 20,800 mobile phone infringements were issued.

Did you now it is an offence to hold the phone while driving or when stationary?

It is also illegal to rest the phone on one’s lap or hold it between one’s ear and shoulder.

Do you think we should push for similar action in Australia?  Have your say…
