Hairstyles for over 60s

My hair has always been very important to me – when I was younger I had long blonde hair that I loved to style into bouffants and beehives, and though it’s now thinned and grey, it’s nevertheless a part of my look and self image. It’s still long but often I want to change it up, only for my hairdresser to suggest to cut it all off! I want to look attractive and keep my hair, so I’ve had a look for some styles that suit mature women and aren’t the typical perm or short cut.

Beautiful 61 year-old Mary Steenburgen has a light but mature hairstyle with a great fringe to top it off. You can achieve this look by straightening the top and your fringe, then curling the ends.

Musician Emmylou Harris, 67, embraces her grey with this effortless wavy ‘do. To create this style, blow dry your hair with a barrel brush.

Bring out your eyes with this stylish crop that Australian presenter Susie Elelman, shows off so well. Who says short hairdos need to be plain? Spike it up with some gel for an edgy look.

Roseanne Barr, 61, has the perfect hairstyle for a fuller figure. This angled crop is stylish and looks modern with her natural grey hair. All you need to do is back comb a section of hair from your scalp and hold in place with a bobbypin at your crown. Straighten or blow dry straight the rest of your hair. If your hair is thin, it can be plumped up with texturing powder

If you still have luscious hair, you can try this gorgeous coloured look that American model Beverly Johnson has. Her two-tone ‘do is easy to achieve at a hairdresser but once at home you can blowdry with a small barrel brush on your fringe and ends to really make yourself stand out.

Glenn Close may be 67 but you wouldn’t know with this youthful hairstyle that never goes out of style. A short crop is a low maintenance cut that can be easily styled to suit day and night. Part your hair to the side and curl throughout, running your fingers through to separate once finished. Spray with medium-hold hairspray and you’re done.

She still turns heads at 68 and it’s no doubt because of her great effortless look. Goldie Hawn’s gold locks are achieved with some light curls throughout, with a middle part to accentuate her features.

Actress Christine Baransk has a mature hairstyle that doesn’t age her, but it’s trying to be too young either. This smart ‘do is as simple as creating a side part, then curling up the ends. Voila!

Helen Mirren never puts a foot wrong, especially with her hair. This asymmetrical bob works with her face shape and is a great way to go short without going the whole way. All it requires is a quick blowdry with a round brush.

If you have dark, thin hair, Sally Field exhibits a fantastic way of styling it. If you’re hair is wavy, you can let it sit as is with a bit of volume powder.
