The stunning streets of Barcelona

Oct 24, 2013

This is the next instalment of Ann’s blog, read Reims and a dud hotel,  Leaving LondonTrafalgar Square Nelsons Column and the Cock for her previous updates.

I’m told I’m too controlling and it’s a fair call but I should have taken control of this one instead of merely expressing concern that the hotel he booked was in the industrial area.

After twelve hours traveling by road and train we are in Barcelona! It’s 9pm and the place was jumping, we’re thinking tapas, sangria somewhere after we check in but as the cab takes us further and further into the boondocks it was pretty obvious that’s not going to happen.

Ok, so room service? Nup and our tickets to the football game that was changed from Sunday to Saturday meaning a gargantuan effort and stress, canceling and rebooking (3 trains and accommodation) and were supposed to be couriered to the hotel? No go. Emailed… we’re supposed to print them ourselves and we bought only iPads with us!

All is saved by the delightful and sympathetic young lady at reception who reads my face. I said only one word as we got out of the cab, guess what? Like I said, I’m controlling (myself that is) and takes pity on Leon. We can have one hour free online, order take away to be delivered, said she hoped we would stay the 5 days but we can check out early, no penalty. Hopefully she’ll be able to print tickets for us too.

Next day, it takes us nearly an hour to get back into the city on the train and another cab ride to get to the centre. Walking around, marveling at the streets and charming alleyways, most hotels are booked out because there is a conference in town but we finally find one with availability from tomorrow for the next 4 days, right in the heart of this wonderful city!
