Travel Guide: The Best of Singapore

Mar 31, 2015

Touted as the ultra-modern, almost futuristic hub of Asia, Singapore may be small in stature but it really packs a punch when it comes to the holiday front. A common stopover destination for those heading to Europe, there is ample reason to extend your time in Singapore. Whether you love to shop ‘til you drop, eat your weight in dumplings, explore beautiful gardens or discover Asian history, Singapore has everything you need. From restaurant recommendations to the latest attractions, you can find out why we adore Singapore with our travel guide.

Where to go

The first place to visit is Singapore’s Downtown Core – the beating heart of the city. Here you will find the recognisable Merlion statue in Merlion Park, the famous Raffles Hotel and a handful of the city’s best museums. Closer to the waterfront, Marina Bay offers impressive views and is home to the beautiful Gardens by the Bay, while Chinatown offers its own collection of shops and restaurants. Sentosa Island is a popular hangout and boasts more than its fair share of attractions, including multiple theme parks, aquariums and beaches, plus plenty of dining options and an award-winning golf course.

What to eat

From Michelin-starred restaurants to hole-in-the-wall diners, Singapore’s thriving food scene is a delight for hungry travellers. You’ll find a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western influences with seafood being a local favourite. Our advice is to sample the famous Singapore chilli crab from Long Beach Restaurant, the Tian Tian chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre and tasty dim sum dishes like barbecue pork buns or steamed prawn dumplings from Tim Ho Wan. You may also be surprised to learn that Singapore’s dessert culture is also booming. We recommend the passion pudding from the patisserie Pantler and the mango snow ice from Mei Heong Yuen Dessert.

Where to shop

Shopping is a popular pastime in Singapore and Orchard Street is the place to go. Here you will find several of the city’s best shopping centres including the multi award-winning Ion Orchard. Home to more than 300 outlets spread over eight levels, the malls plays host to all the big-name fashion brands. Little India boasts the renowned 24-hour Mufasta Centre, which offers oodles of discounted electronics. Pound the pavement and find Singapore’s best shopping streets around Chinatown or visit Haji Lane, Dempsey Road or Bugis Street. The city is also home to fantastic markets, so be sure to check out what’s on during your visit.

What to see

Singapore’s stunning skyline is famous for a reason. Appreciate the breathtaking views of the pristine city from the heights of the Singapore Flyer or take a cruise along Marina Bay. Nature enthusiasts will relish time spent in the gorgeous Singapore Botanic Gardens, a 74-hectare oasis that also houses the beloved National Orchid Garden. If you have time to visit Sentosa Island, climb the heights of the Tiger Sky Tower for incredible panoramic views from the revolving floor. The Singapore Zoo is also one of the city’s top attractions and is lauded for its pleasant cage-free environment. If you happen to have the grandkids with you, then a visit to Universal Studios Singapore is an absolute must.

Where to stay

Singapore has plenty of options for international travellers seeking shut-eye. Staying near the airport is your best bet for a quick stop, while those with more time to spare can find respite in the heart of the city. Many of Singapore’s mid-range hotels are found near the western end of the Singapore River or in Chinatown, while the more pricey accommodation is situated around Marina Bay or Orchard Road. If you have the resource to splurge, consider a stay at the opulent five-star Raffles Hotel.
